                         Scaffolding

Q.1 What is scaffolding?
Ans: Scaffolding is temporary working platform which provide support both man and
materials.
Q.2 What are basic components of scaffolds?
Ans: Sole board, base plate, bracing, ledger/runner, standard/post, ladder clamp, coupler,
transom/bearer, planks, toe board, top & mid rail and adjustable jack.
Q.3 What is the tag system?
Ans: A tag is put on scaffolding by a competent person indicating the present condition
whether it can be used and whether fall protection needed or not.
Q.4 Who is the competent person in tag system of scaffolding?
Ans: Competent person in tag system is the scaffolding supervisor.
Q.5 How many tag we are using in scaffolding?
Ans: Green Tag : Means access to work without full body harness.
Yellow Tag: Means that scaffolding is complete but use full body harness.
Red Tag : Means not use except erection and dismantled.
Q.6 What is the detail in scaffold tag?
Ans: Location, maximum loading capacity, date erected and inspected with foreman’s name
and signature.
Q.7 What is work at height?
Ans: A work which is above 1.8 meter is called work at height.
Q.8 What is fall protection?
Ans: The process by which we use to protect from falling is called fall protection. Fall
protection system included guardrail system, personal fall arrest system and falling object
protection.
Q.9 What is the guard rail system?
Ans: Guard rail consisting of top rail, mid rail and toe board that protect worker from falling.
Q.10 What is the toe board?
Ans: The process by which we can protect material and tools from falling is called toe board.
Q.11 What is the maximum height of the top rail and mid rail?
Ans: The maximum height of the top rail is 38 inch to 45 inch and mid rail is between the top
rail and working platform. It will support 91 kg (200lbs) without failure.
Q.12 What is personal fall arrest?
Ans: When a guard rail system does not install properly then we use personal fall arrest system
including life line, full body harness and lanyard. Always wear the personal fall arrest
system and shall be capable of 2268 kg (5000 lbs) without failure and also anchorage
point.
Q.13 What is life line?
Ans: A life line is a fall protection safety device to carry out work at height where scaffolding
cannot be provided.
Q.14 What are the requirements for life line?
Ans: Requirements for Vertical life line:
1) Be capable of supporting at least 2268 kg (5000 lbs) per person attached.
2) Not be guard rail, stand pipes, vents, small diameter piping system, cable trays, electrical
conduit or other structures that cannot safety support 2268 kg (5000 lbs) dead weight.
Requirements for Horizontal life line:
1) Be a minimum 12 mm (1/2 inch) diameter wire rope having a breaking strength specified
by the manufacturer of at least 9000 kg (20,000 lbs). Other materials, such as manila,
nylon or polypropylene rope shall not use as a horizontal life line.
2) Having a safety factor of at least two against failure including anchor points and be
capable of supporting 2268 kg (5000 lbs) per person attached, applied anywhere along
the life line.
Q.15 What is falling object protection?
Ans: Every open side shall be installing the toe board which is protected by the falling objects
protection.
1) The size of the toe board is 25 mm thick and 4 to 6 inch in width.
2) The toe board is capable of 23 kg (50 lbs) to support without failure.
Q.16 What is anchorage point?
Ans: It is that solid point which has the ability to support 2268 kg (5000 lbs) without failure.
Q.17 How many types of Scaffolding?
Ans: There are 26 types of scaffolding but most commonly used in work place are following.
1) System Scaffolding
2) Tube and Coupler Scaffolding
3) Hanging Scaffolding
4) Special Scaffolding
5) Mobile Scaffolding
Q.18 What is System Scaffolding?
Ans: A scaffolding consisting of standard with fix connection points that accept ledgers,
transom and braces that can be interconnected free at determine level is called system
scaffolding.
Q.19 What is Tube and Coupler scaffolding?
Ans: Scaffolding constructed of steel tubing that serves as posts, ledgers, transoms, braces and
ties; a base supporting the posts and specially designed scaffolding scaffold coupler that
serves to connect the various members.
Q.20 What is hanging scaffolding?
Ans: Scaffolding that is hanging by fixed length with ropes is called hanging scaffolding.
Q.21 What is special scaffolding?
Ans: Any scaffolding which is more than 38 meter height and also required scaffolding plan
which is prepared by scaffolding inspector.
Q.22 What is mobile scaffolding?
Ans: Any scaffolding which we can move easily from one place to another place is called
mobile scaffolding.
Q.23 What are the requirements for scaffolding?
Ans:
1) Work permit system as per GI 2.100
2) Area shall be properly barricaded with proper signage.
3) Proper supervision tell the end of job
4) Ground must be leveled and compacted
5) Required certified Saudi Aramco scaffolder.
6) Use sole board with base plate.
7) Install proper guardrail system.
8) Fully planked working platform.
9) Shafting of materials by using GEN wheel.
10) Scaffolding from 01 meter up to 6 and 12 meter inspect and tag by the Saudi Aramco
certified supervisor and scaffolding inspector.
Q.24 What are the hazards of scaffolding?
Ans:
1) Collapse of scaffolding
2) Falling from height
3) Falling objects
4) Slip and trip hazard
5) Pinch point hazard
6) Unstable and uneven ground surface
7) Incompetent personnel
8) Working on red tag
9) Unauthorized entry to work area
Q.25 How many types of scaffold supervisor?
Ans: There are three types of scaffold supervisor.
1) Certified Scaffold Supervisor I:Can supervise and sign scaffold tag for all kind of
scaffolding, including special scaffolding.
2) Certified Scaffold Supervisor II (T): Can supervise and sign scaffold tag for only
Tube and coupler scaffold less than 12.2 meters.
3) Certified Scaffold Supervisor II (S): Can supervise and sign scaffold tag for only
